Executive Summary

Which thing has made you capable of reading this data? The answer is your ability to read English. How would you feel if you are surrounded with people who do not know how to communicate in your language and you do not know how to communicate in their language? You will feel isolated because you will not be able to share your ideas or emotions with them. We are working to eradicate this isolation by teaching Gurmukhi language in Terrace.

There are a number of English-speaking Indian people in Terrace whose family members do not know how to communicate in English because they can communicate in Gurmukhi only. We are providing classes of Gurmukhi for all forms: writing, reading, listening and speaking so that these people can make their family members feel special by learning Gurmukhi to understand their emotions. There are many non-Indian people in Terrace who want to learn Gurmukhi so that they can provide emotional support to their elderly Indian friends by communicating with them in their native language.

We are familiar with busy schedules of Terrace’s people so we are providing classes at weekends so that our students can learn Gurmukhi without worrying about their studies or jobs. We are welcomed by majority of people in Terrace, especially Sikh community. Sikh Temple named Gurdwara Miri Piri Khalsa Darbar, Walsh Ave, Terrace has provided a number of facilities to us in organizing these classes because capability to read Gurmukhi enables people to read Guru Granth Sahib Ji (Central holy religious scripture of Sikh religion). Moreover, additional activities organized by us for our students include teaching Sikh history and dumalla tying which will lead to increase in number of Sikh devotees in Terrace.

We have started these classes now because currently, there are plenty of students in Terrace who are willing to learn Gurmukhi and moreover, we do not have any competitor in Terrace. Our classes are going to be bigger in size with time as more Indian families are moving to Terrace nowadays and they do not want their children to get fully immersed in Canadian culture and forget their native language Gurmukhi.

We are not only providing affordable classes to our students but also offering high pay rate (1.5 times the minimum pay rate in BC) to our assistants. We understand that language plays a vital role in everyone’s life and many times, its importance gets neglected. That is why, we are welcoming you either as a student or as an assistant to join our team so that people around us do not have to feel alone because of unfamiliarity with a language.
